Particle Counter
CPN-72

Diffusion Charger technology for ultrafine particle detection (23–200 nm) in Otto or Diesel engines — no dilution fluid or gas required. Compliant with EU Regulation 2017/1154 for PTI inspection and RDE testing.

NAPRO CPN-72 Particle Counter

Ultrafine particle measurement in Diesel and Otto cycle engines

Based on the Diffusion Charger measurement method, the CPN-72 detects excess particle emissions in both Diesel and Otto cycle engines (gasoline, ethanol, CNG and flex-fuel), revealing faults or the absence of filtration and aftertreatment systems. Designed to meet the demands of modern vehicle inspection programmes that require direct counting of ultrafine particles.

Compliant with EU Regulation 2017/1154, approved for PTI inspections and RDE tests.

  • Applicable to Diesel and Otto cycle engines (gasoline, ethanol, flex-fuel and CNG)
  • Diffusion Charger technology — no dilution fluid or gas required
  • Detection range: 23 to 200 nm
  • Measurement range: 0 to 5,000,000 #/cm³
  • Response time under 15 seconds
  • Ready to use after ~12 min warm-up
  • EU 2017/1154 compliance — PTI and RDE
  • Heated sampling probe (optional)

Diffusion Charger Technology

The Diffusion Charger principle works by electrically charging the particles present in the exhaust gas and measuring the resulting electrical current, which is proportional to particle concentration. This method is particularly effective for detecting ultrafine particles in the 23 to 200 nm range — precisely the range most critical from a public health standpoint, as these particles penetrate deep into the respiratory system.

Unlike traditional opacimeters, the CPN-72 can identify emissions in modern Diesel engines with partially blocked or damaged DPF filters — situations where visible smoke may be minimal but the concentration of harmful particles remains high.

Operational Advantages

  • No dilution fluid or gas required — zero consumable cost
  • Simplified operation — minimal training required
  • Fast and stable response throughout the workday
  • Detects faulty DPF even with minimal visible smoke
  • Traceable results accepted by environmental authorities in Brazil and Europe

Optional Accessory

  • Heated sampling probe — recommended for environments with temperature variations, preventing condensation and particle loss
